Which word to use, market by market
The word matters less than people fear, but using the local one tells the reader you know their process. A quick guide, market by market:
- United States: punch list, with punch items. Architects often write field observations during construction and switch to punch list at substantial completion.
- United Kingdom and Ireland: snag list, snags, snagging inspection. New-build buyers search for snagging; contractors say defects once the defects liability period starts.
- Australia and New Zealand: defects list or defect inspection, with practical completion as the milestone.
- Canada: deficiency list, deficiencies, and a deficiency holdback on the final payment.
What does not change is the content of each line: a number, a location, a photo, what is wrong, who fixes it and by when. A snag list written in Manchester and a punch list written in Denver answer the same six questions.
